Artist Statement

Working from my photographic references I capture a transient emotion of youth that surpasses or eclipses their inherent innocence. The post card sized paintings embrace the intimacy of the moment while simultaneously evoking a sense of nostalgia for something to be remembered. Making work has always been a way of analyzing the world around me. While early works were a formal expression of paint and movement, my current work has returned to representational subject matter as I explore the relationship of youth and innocence when they collide with more mature contexts. Abstraction has been forced so much in the mainstream that it could be questioned for lack of content, by revisiting the more tradition representational subject it allows for an embracing of craft and honesty.
